“Looking at the lights, dancing in the sky.”
Meet The Artist
Jess Chalmers was born in Grahamstown (now Makhanda) in the Eastern Cape. She
comes from a family of artists.
Having left for the UK in 1995, she primarily pursued her musical career, establishing
herself in London as a performer and a teacher.
However, Jess has always simultaneously pursued her interest in Fine Art, and having
attended many Life Drawing courses over two decades, she now has a considerable
portfolio of her own, built up over the years.
More recently, Jess has completed several courses at the prestigious London Drawing
School, where she has concentrated on drawing the human figure. She has specifically
focussed on Life Drawing (drawing the unclothed model); drawing the clothed model;
drawing a head and on contemporary portraiture.
Jess’s work explores the intersection of form, feeling, and story. Through a mixed media,
Jess seeks to capture not just the physical presence of her subjects, but also their
essential essence, both in strength and vulnerability. Each drawing attempts to explore the
humanity that connects us all.
Jess has recently diversified further into landscape and flower drawings.
Beyond exhibiting original works, Jess is also passionate about making art accessible and
experiential.
She will be running varied and immersive workshops, from single-day to week-long
courses. Participants can sign up to morning and/or afternoon sessions, designed to help
them explore their creativity, in an open and supportive environment. These workshops will
welcome artists and beginners alike. They will be open to anyone seeking to expand their
skills, and who is wishing to experience the meditative and grounding quality of drawing.
Jess’ creative offering extends beyond the studio.
She has developed a range of cards, available in curated packs, that celebrate the
expressive power of drawing. Prints of her work are also available.
She has recently started to experiment with poetry and art, with the fusion of text and
image allowing her to expand her language of expression.
Art embraces a slowing down and a more focussed attention. It encourages a deeper
exploration of a multi-layered life. Through her drawings, courses, and creative projects,
Jess aims to inspire others to engage with themselves more deeply and with the world
more abundantly — with curiosity, courage, and a sense of wonder.
